Read MoreMetaTrader 4, also known as MT4, is an electronic trading platform widely used by online retail foreign exchange speculative traders. It was developed by MetaQuotes Software and released in 2005. The software is licensed to foreign exchange brokers who provide the software to their clients. The software consists of both a client and server component. The server component is run by the broker and the client software is provided to the broker’s customers, who use it to see live streaming prices and charts, to place orders, and to manage their accounts.
The client is a Microsoft Windows-based application that became popular mainly due to the ability for end users to write their own trading scripts and robots that could automate trading. In 2010, MetaQuotes released a successor, MetaTrader 5. However, uptake was slow and as of April 2013 most brokers still used MT4. While there is no official MetaTrader 4 version available for Mac OS, some brokers provide their own custom developed MT4 variants for Mac OS.
Metatrader is also available for mobile and supports Android, iOS (no longer available as of September 2022) and Windows mobile
MetaTrader 5, also known as MT5, is the multi-asset electronic trading platform that replaces MetaTrader 4. It was developed by MetaQuotes Software and released in June 2010. MetaTrader 5 is a trading platform that offers stock & commodities trading and allows the creation of multiple accounts with multiple brokers.
The platform offers built-in trading robots, a database of copy trading developers, and virtual hosting service. The interface of the platform is available in 31 languages, the platform is free of charge for users of the broker.
MetaTrader 5 is available for Microsoft Windows users, the client can also be installed on MacOS via Wine or via a web browser terminal. The mobile version of the platform has been released on Android and iOS.
Both platforms enable forex trading & providing traders with tools to make trading decisions. MT5 allows to trade stocks, CFDs, and futures in addition to forex.
Despite the fact that MetaTrader 5 is an upgrade of the trading platform, users have noted that MetaTrader 4 is still the platform of choice for forex brokers given that MT5 is a 64-bit platform whereas MT4 is 32-bit.
On January 12, 2018, MetaQuotes has made an announcement, stating that it will no longer sell the MetaTrader 4 Trading Platform.
Finance Magnates noted that 91.4% of FX volume was generated by MetaTrader 4 in the third quarter of 2019.
